Lyrics

Lord, She Bores Me

See the stewardess
Living next door to us
Matching suit and carry luggage
She knows our eyes are
Through the blinds and spying her
She smooths her stockings and frontage
So I check on her return flight
Gotta get my timing right
This is quite a production
I’ll be picking up the paper
When she’s back the morning later
I’ll make my best introduction
They call me Doctor now but I still feel the same
I won the girl next door
Now she’s wearing my last name
What’s the story
My little piece of glory
Lord, she bores me silly

She takes the homefront
With children and the breakfront
I should call myself lucky
Cause I’m a man on the go-go
Head of echo-cardio
Managed care and good money
All day long I look for heartbeats on a screen
I come home at night to what’s supposed to be my dream
She stands before me
Lord, she bores me
Don’t ask me to explain
She still adores me
Lord, she bores me
I still tell her I’m OK

At the new neighbor’s party
I’m talking hardening of the artery
With the neighborhood smokers
From the room on the other side
She spills a drink and caught my eye
I’m no better than a stranger
Then through a cloud of smoke it gets hard for us to see
Falls like an incense blessing empty reverie

She can’t ignore me
Lord, she bores me
Make it stop and go away
The sad, true story
Lord, she bores me
Pretty soon I’ll go insane

Eternal Love

I’m living on ashes
I developed a taste, ahh but you never win
I turned my back on eternal love
Too many bad crashes
Some were close calls, ahh but you never win
I set a date with eternal love
I was born right there
Lived right there
And I died right there
I said a prayer
Drank the cup for a moment there
I never got drunk on eternal love

It’s not from bad living
Cause Lord knows I tried not to make those mistakes
I did my best for eternal love
Too little sinning
I could give it a try, ahh if that’s what it takes
I can’t predict this eternal love
I was born right here
Died right here
Took a breath right here
I made my prayer
Passed the cup for a moment there
I couldn’t get drunk on eternal love

Most of my friends
They walk around like they haven’t a care
They never heard of eternal love
Good common sense
Tells them they’re hungry, or they’ve had enough
They think it’s love when they’re getting it up
I was born right there
Lived right there
And I died right there
I said a prayer
Drank the cup for a moment there
Another hard swallow
A fallen tomorrow
I’m letting it all go
Eternal love
I was born right here
Died right here
Took a breath right here
I made my prayer
Passed the cup for a moment there

Supernatural

In the beginning there was you and me
Hoping for some miracle to believe in
Walking down the safest streets
Thinking this was death without the bleeding
We are the supernatural
We are a Love Supreme
Broken, petty thieves somehow redeemed

When you saw that it was good
You helped it make sense to me–infinity
When my ears couldn’t hear
And these eyes would not see
You touched me
We are the supernatural
The real conspiracy
Little whiskey priests that Love received

Where’s the power and the glory
Where’s the trumpets heralding
Where’s the one you promised me
It’s all so ordinary
We are the supernatural
We are a Love Supreme
We are the supernatural
The real conspiracy

Chatham

Before she thought of what to say
He held a diamond to her face
And vowed ‘You’ll never have to live your life in fear
The writing’s more than on the wall
Our folks can’t clean it anymore
They did their best, left us the rest, we’ll go from here
There’s a place you won’t believe
Where the front step’s always clean
And you can teach me what it takes to make you smile
It’s just a short commute from here
Might not be heaven, but it’s near
When we make it out to Chatham we’ll be fine

‘You’re riding home the subway trains
Clutching your purse, counting your change
And the man across the aisle gives you a glare
You keep your eyes fixed straight ahead
And just remember what I said
Even an angel has to sometimes be prepared
We’ll be out among the trees
Far from the beggars and the thieves
They can take their world and burn it to the sky
We can live our life in peace
I think we both know what I mean
When we make it out to Chatham we’ll be fine

‘Let me take you worlds away
On a safe commuter train

‘It’s as ugly as the truth
But tell me what else can we do?
When you’re always looking forward and behind
They’ll say I’m hateful to the core
Go ask them who’s living next door?
When we make it out to Chatham we’ll be fine

‘I’ll be out front raking leaves
Out where every backyard’s green
And the sidewalk marks the outskirts of your life
We can catch the 5:05
If our connection’s right on time
When we make it out to Chatham we’ll be fine’

Escape To Houdini’s Grave

She takes a little skip right out of the rain
And she shakes off her umbrella
She takes the train a thousand mornings before
And she always knows the weather
I try and look at her through bloodshot eyes
And a head that’s dumb from aching
I need a shower, I could use a good shave
But she best not be mistaken

In my better days
I made my escape to Houdini’s grave
With a girl who didn’t mind the rain

Too many tears had started streaking her face
I was a hoax in need of practice
Smart enough to lose her faith in love
But she still believed in magic
I know a place where the master lays
As he works his best escape twist
Put your coat on and I’ll take you today
And I’ll make a solemn promise

Before the setting sun
Before the setting sun is washed away
You’re gonna take my hand, you’re gonna say my name

You’re crazy lady if you look in my eyes
And believe in what they’re showing
Smart enough to come in from the rain
But you can’t follow where I’m going

I’m gonna make my way
Make my way back to Houdini’s grave
Make my great escape in the pouring rain

I don’t mind the rain…

She’s Going Underground

They’re selling chances at Garcia’s Grocery
A 50/50, she picks up her bags and leaves
I could be wrong, but from what I see
She’s going underground
I’ve seen a change in her I never would believe
She’s making confidence look like a new disease
With her Must-See-TV personality
She’s going underground
And it’s down, down, down
Listen to that sound
She’s going underground
Yes it’s down, down, down
Spread the word around
She’s going underground
She’s going underground
Beauty has gone to sleep
And if you ask me
I don’t think she’s ever waking
She’s wearing halter tops and shades that wrap around
She’s eating foods that I really can’t pronounce
She’s getting skinnier, rotting pound by pound
She’s going underground
Maybe I was bad at reading the signs
Sometimes I worry myself blind
Maybe you got tired of changing your mind
And picked the best mask you could find
Tell me what should I believe?
Is being born again a question of degree?
There’s really nothing I could say to you right now
Your evolution’s brought you to a higher ground
But when you’re growing up means you’re dying out
You’re going underground

And it’s down, down, down
Listen to that sound
She’s going underground
Yes it’s down, down, down
Spread the word around
She’s going underground
She’s going underground
Beauty has gone to sleep
And if you ask me
I don’t think she’s ever waking
They’re still calling up and checking their machines
They’re still worrying a bit obsessively
They’re still driving their cars too aggressively
They lay their dollars down on daily lotteries
A billion to one is still a reason to believe
But they won’t drop a dime on her memory
She’s going underground

Peacetime (Reprise)

When another year’s gone by
And I’m being kissed by strangers
When another midnight strikes
And I’m dancing with the neighbors
I’ll be hiding in the crowd
But I guess there’s no escaping
Putting in the peacetime hours
My champagne buzz is fading

24 hours to go
Much more than this I can’t be sure of
24 hours more
Is more than I care to know

I’ve got a future in this life
I’ve seen coming attractions
A better job and reading time
My Jesus Christ distraction
A modest home and store-bought flowers
If I can find the right arrangement
Putting in the peacetime hours
I’ll meet you at the pavement

Saturdays
Are something to look forward to
We stay up late and talk
We call them “heart-to-hearts”
And fall asleep with a glow
I’m not alone after all…

When another year’s gone by
And we’re remembering our favorites
If nothing seems to cross my mind
You’ll say I’m such a panic
Standing in a far watchtower
High above the coastline
I’m putting in the peacetime hours
And I look for signs of life

24 hours to go
Much more than this I can’t be sure of
24 hours more
Is more than I care to know
