Produced and directed by McG Media’s Bill McGarvey, “Communion” is a feature-length film based on the experiences of Broadway acting veteran and beloved music teacher, Matthew LaBanca.
After 10 years of employment, LaBanca, an openly gay man, was fired by the Brooklyn diocese for marrying his longtime partner. Rather than take a severance package and sign an NDA, Matthew’s story went viral, and his story was nationally. His one-man play had a sold-out Off-Broadway run that served as the basis for the film.
Religion News Service (RNS) interviewed both McGarvey and LaBanca about the film and covered its packed NYC premiere at another Catholic venue, the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola.

"Matthew's script wasn't a polemic, it wasn't an argument; it was a story," McGarvey said. "And I think stories are what change people."
